What was the History and the Origin of Estella TV?
Estrella TV is a Spanish-language broadcast television network that features movies, telenovelas, sports, religious programming, news, and televangelist programs. It is owned and operated by the Estrella Media subsidiary of HPS Investment Partners, LLC. The network’s programming is primarily distributed in the United States by DirecTV, and in Canada by Bell Media-owned TSN. The network’s programming is broadcast throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and various U.S. territories. Its sister network, Estrella TV Dos, features programming aimed at the Hispanic audience.
On July 22, 2007, the Spanish-language television network Univision announced plans to purchase the assets (including talent) of Telemundo Internacional, the network’s former sister network, in an effort to boost its ratings. Telemundo Internacional had been owned by the Univision Communications subsidiary of Univision Communications, Inc., until December 2008, when Univision Communications sold the network to HPS Investment Partners, LLC.
On September 12, 2007, HPS Investment Partners announced that Univision and Telemundo would merge to form a joint venture, Univision Communications Inc. By December 5, 2007, Univision Communications announced its intention to acquire 100% of the stock of Telemundo International. On July 20, 2008, the shareholders of Telemundo International approved the Univision Communications Inc. acquisition of the network. And on January 6, 2009, Univision Communications Inc. completed its acquisition of Telemundo Internacional.
The live and on-demand network is a partnership between Univision Communications Inc. and Discovery Communications, Inc. “Estrella TV is the launch of a new era in live and on-demand Spanish language television,” said David Zaslav, CEO, Discovery Communications, Inc. They’re excited to power Estrella TV with Discovery’s unparalleled programming lineup that spans across networks and genres to attract new viewers. This partnership is the culmination of their strategy to deliver compelling content directly.
“At Estrella TV, we believe that television has the power to transform lives. We realize that not everyone speaks English and that Spanish speakers represent more than half the population in the United States,” said José Alberto Macías, President, Estrella Media. Its programming is available in more than 15 million homes through partnerships with major cable providers, including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Cablevision, and Charter. The network’s programming includes original series, movies, and documentaries, as well as exclusive, rebroadcasts of Spanish-language versions of popular English-language shows.
